I’m writing to you having just lived beyond the half way mark of your race. You did it! You made it this far. But I have to tell you a few things I wished I had known before I left home to go on this unexpected journey.

  1. You learn a lot about yourself. You end up working on yourself and how to be better then you ever expected.
  2. Your style never changes. As a person who got a degree in AE and lived the past couple years either in the backcountry or at camp you have the exact same clothes you did then on the race. That’s ok! Most people will tell and show you the comparison of their “race” style and their “real world” style and they are typically very different. But your isn’t and it makes people laugh so be proud of your backpack living style.
  3. You are an introvert! On this race you will be with people 24/7! And often not allowed to get that alone time. So it’s very important you figure out how to have together alone time. Sooner is better then later.
  4. Never leave the house without a rain jacket in Guatemala.
  5. Don’t worry so much. Surprise! You worry a lot! (I mean a lot). Mostly about money, what with being a treasurer and all, which reminds me of my next point…..
  6. When they ask you to be a treasurer say no.
  7. Try harder to be disciplined in reading God’s word more often.
  8. Don’t forget to be real with God
  9. Pack one more pair of socks. (Your socks have become holey, unfortunately not holy).
  10. Pack a warmer jacket for Romania
  11. Even though you are younger than everyone else doesn’t mean you don’t have a capability to do things just as well.
  12. Take toilet paper everywhere!!
  13. There are many different types of ministry. Ministry is not confined to working for a church. There is ministry to your team, people back home, the locals living around you, all on top of the planned ministry that we are connected with.
  14. Although it might seem obvious: you can never ever pray too much! Pray in everything and for everyone! Never hesitate to talk to your Heavenly Father.

Overall you are learning a lot and I’m sure still will be in the last 4 months of the race. So don’t hesitate! Keep pressing in! And don’t forget to call home every once in awhile.

Sincerely, 7 months older you.

  1. 7 months older Liv, glad you are still here- glad I get to make memories with you- glad I get to laugh with you all this month in Turkey !

  2. Dear Olivia, what wisdom you have gained on your journey. From one introvert to another, do not neglect alone time. You need it to regroup and refresh so you can be your best. If you don’t, you will become drained to the point of exhaustion. You seem to know this and are managing well. I admire your spunk and love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Praying for you dear cousin. Love Kirstin Peterson

  3. Very insightful, great and creative post. That we all did this on a regular basis.
